Welcome to the website of Infermeria Empordà. This company provides professional nursing care at home, on the Costa Brava and, if necessary, beyond.

Introduction

Although life on the Costa Brava is often sunny, medical problems can arise and you may need a doctors visit or perhaps hospitalization. Only then it often appears that you do not master the Spanish language as well as you thought.

This language barrier can be a problem. Poor communication can lead to uncertainty, dissatisfaction and mistakes. It severely complicates the relationship between the patient and the healthcare workers. And might slow down the healing process.

It can be helpfull to talk to someone who speaks your language, has experience in health care, can translate if necessary and possibly deliver home care.

My name is Brigitta van der Steene (Nº de Col. legiada: 17.04636.1). I am a nurse, trained in Amsterdam, and specialized in cancer, chronic diseases and palliative, terminal care. I have been living and working in Spain on the Costa Brava for 12 years.

Professional nursing care

As a nurse I can help you in many ways. I take care of wounds, check blood pressure, give injections, help with washing and dressing or give care at an approaching end of life. But I also provide psychological and emotional support, give advice if adjustments are necessary caused by changes in fisical or mental health, or help with medication intake, checking the medication box, the electronic prescription, etc.

Interpreting and translating

I speak Dutch, English, German, French, Spanish and Catalan. It is possible to accompany you to the GP (CAP) or the hospital to translate during the interview.

To be able to do this properly, a preparatory meeting is necessary in order to clarify your health problem.

Why?

Home care is not as well known in Spain as in other countries. Nursing homecare is sometimes provided by local medical centers, but only in a few cases.

It can be helpfull to talk together about the situation at home: what is the problem, which care questions do you have, etc.

We then discuss the (physical) care, aids, medication and materials and how we can arrange the care in such a way that you receive the care that you need.

Holidays

If you go on holiday to the Costa Brava and need nursingcare, then this is possible!
It also is possible to rent hospital material, like beds, etc. Contact us for an estiment.

Where?

The care is provided on the Costa Brava, in the Alt and Baix Empordà.
Guidance / translation is also possible in Girona and Barcelona.

Nursing care and cure:

• Palliative care
• Oncological care (information and support before, during and after the treatment)
• Wound care: surgical, non-surgical, ulcers (vascular, decubitus, eg)
• Injections
• Blood collection
• Removing stitches and stamples
• Measurements: blood pressure, oxygen level in the blood, blood sugar
• INR control
• Health education, promotion of therapy compliance and support: diabetes mellitus, COPD, high blood pressure, after hospitalization and surgery
• Assistance and nursing care concerning medication, visits to doctors / hospitals, medical examinations and treatment, adapted material for home, emotional help to client and family, etc
• Translation and support when visiting a doctor, hospitalization, medical examination, etc
